The Familienverband der Freiherren von Quast was established under Swiss law to unite name-bearing relatives of Johann Anton Freiherr von Quast who hold the title Freiherr (Baron) and the predicate von.

The historical Baronial coat of arms from 1790 was customized for personal use while maintaining the ancestral heritage. According to English heraldic literature, the uppermost horizontal section of a shield, known as the “chief,” is traditionally utilized to display personal charges or an augmentation of honour. By introducing specific symbols into this prominent area, the standard family coat of arms is differentiated to represent a specific individual.
For our association, this heraldic practice was applied by augmenting the original 1790 design with a chief of gold ermine. Placing this distinctive pattern in the upper part of the shield makes the historic arms deeply personal to the family association, distinguishing its current members under a specific shared identity.
This augmented coat of arms has been officially registered for our members by the Department of Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa. The heraldic description is included in the Government Gazette No. 37307 of 14 February 2014, No. 108, and the registration was formally published in the Government Gazette No. 37653 of 23 May 2014, under Government Notice No. 380.
